Adult Foster Care of the North Shore (AFCNS) was proud to participate in Meeting the Moment: A Community Conversation and Resource Fair in Lowell, hosted by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Persons with Disabilities.
The event brought together individuals with disabilities, caregivers, service providers, and community leaders to share ideas, resources, and solutions that strengthen support systems across Massachusetts.
For AFCNS, the day was about more than attending—it was about listening, learning, and building meaningful connections that can better serve the individuals and families we support every day.

Connecting with Organizations Making a Difference
One of the most impactful parts of the event was the opportunity to meet with organizations doing important work across the state.
Supporting Brain Injury Survivors and Caregivers
We connected with Kelly Buttiglieri, Esq. from the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals living with brain injuries and the people who care for them.

Their monthly support groups provide a welcoming space for survivors and caregivers to:
Share experiences
Learn coping strategies
Build a sense of community
Groups are available for a variety of needs, including stroke survivors, caregivers, and younger individuals, with both in-person and virtual options available. Best of all, these groups are free and accessible to those who need them.
Resources for Veterans at the Resource Fair
Cynthia Bjorlie also met with Scott Pitta, Chief of Staff of the Office of Veteran Advocate.

The office plays an important role in helping veterans connect with:
Benefits
Job training
Employment opportunities
These resources are critical in supporting veterans as they transition into civilian life and access the services they deserve.
Empowering the LatinX Community
Another meaningful connection was with Diego Leonardo, founder of the LatinX Community Center for Empowerment in Lowell.

The center focuses on addressing barriers within the LatinX community by offering programs such as:
English language classes
Citizenship support
Financial education workshops
They also host a vibrant annual summer festival, bringing the community together and celebrating culture, connection, and empowerment.

Why These Connections Matter
At AFCNS, we know that strong community partnerships lead to better outcomes for the individuals and caregivers we serve. Events like Meeting the Moment highlight how many organizations are working toward the same goal: creating more accessible, supportive, and inclusive systems of care.
By building relationships with groups like these, we’re able to:
Connect families to additional resources
Stay informed on evolving community needs
Strengthen the network of support around those in adult foster care
Moving Forward Together
We’re grateful to have participated in this important event and to have met so many dedicated professionals and advocates.
A special thank you to the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Persons with Disabilities for hosting such a meaningful and impactful gathering.
If you’re looking for support for yourself or a loved one, or if you’d like to learn more about Adult Foster Care services, AFCNS is here to help.
